No AMO dues increase in 2011

The following letter from AMO National President Tom Bethel was sent to all members of American Maritime Officers.

I am pleased to report that membership dues in American Maritime Officers will not increase in 2011.

The decision to hold membership dues at current levels next year was made unanimously by the AMO National Executive Board after a joint review of our union's finances by the board and certified public accountants. The decision reflected the recommendation of the AMO National Secretary-Treasurer. Both actions are required annually under Article V Section 1(f) of the American Maritime Officers National Constitution.

I am also pleased to note that membership dues in AMO have increased only four times in 29 years, that dues rates in AMO remain the lowest by far among the three U.S. merchant marine officers' unions, and that -- unlike the other licensed seagoing unions -- AMO does not supplement membership dues with mandatory deductions from vacation benefits.

In this context, I ask that each of you participate in the AMO Voluntary Political Action Fund in 2011. The AMO Voluntary Political Action Fund is used exclusively to support the election campaigns of members of the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate known to support the U.S. merchant fleet and American merchant mariners in all domestic and international trades -- every single seafaring job under the U.S. flag is a result of legislative work.

On behalf of the National Executive Board of AMO and all AMO representatives and employees, I extend best wishes for a happy, healthy holiday season and a more prosperous New Year.
