Reminder: DOT changes to drug testing policies

The Department of Transportation has announced changes to its drug testing policies that will come into effect Oct. 1, 2010.

The changes are intended to align DOT requirements with those of the Department of Health and Human Services. Laboratory testing cutoffs for cocaine and amphetamines will be lowered by half, resulting in a possible "marked increase" in users being identified, according to the Final Rule published in the Federal Register. Additionally, the Department will begin testing for 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine, also known as MDMA or ecstasy, adopting the HHS laboratory testing requirements for the drug.

A notice describing the changes in further detail, with instructions for employers and medical review officers, is available online.
