Members of TECH Class 112, here in Dania Beach, Fla. in October, included Alexander Alfonso, Charles Fischer Jr., Timothy J. McDonald, Trenton Park, James Rowe and Flynn Vanneste. The members of the American Maritime Officers and STAR Center TECH Class 112 committed to raising awareness during the month of October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. At the beginning of the month, it was noticed that all the members of the class had shaved their heads. When they were asked by STAR Center why they did this, they sent a note, which read, in part: "Last Saturday night, all six of us were just talking in one of our rooms. Eventually, one of us decided to pull out a new diary they bought and glance through it. At the top of each page there was a question of some sort ... One of the questions for a day in October was 'Who has inspired you the most?' And we all spent a few moments pondering that. After taking turns sharing responses, one of us mentioned a family member, who was battling cancer. "After that we all began to take notice that each of us has someone close to them who was affected by cancer. One thing led to another and we realized that October is actually Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In a sort of spur-of-the-moment thing, we decided to play a small part in the fight to raise awareness. Most of us had already donated towards the cause, and those that hadn't sent donations in. "Then we decided as a group to go out and do what we could to support the cause. As we were restricted by our daily uniforms, we came up with the idea to shave our heads in support of the organization. And so, outside, we took turns shaving our heads and showing our unwavering support with the fight against cancer." TECH Class 112 continued their work throughout the month to raise awareness by making and distributing Breast Cancer Awareness ribbons to staff and to AMO members attending courses at STAR Center. Although Breast Cancer Awareness Month is now drawing to a close, there is still time to join TECH Class 112 in raising awareness about the impact of Breast Cancer. More information is available on the AMO Plans website. |
