TECH Program selected as finalist for Lloyd's List Americas Award in Safety Training Initiative category

The Engineering Candidate Hawespipe (TECH) Program - offered by American Maritime Officers and the AMO Safety and Education Plan's STAR Center - has been selected as one of three finalists for a Lloyd's List Americas Award in the category of Safety Training Initiative.

The prestigious Lloyd's List Americas Awards recognize shipping and logistics companies, ports, environmental initiatives, training and innovation across the Americas, and involve some of the maritime industry's largest ship owners and operators.

Finalists were chosen by a panel of industry executives from across the Americas, who met in March following the Connecticut Maritime Association annual conference in Stamford, Conn.

The awards will be presented during a ceremony on May 23 in Houston, Texas.

The two-year TECH Program provides highly qualified apprentice engineers with a comprehensive curriculum that includes shore side training at STAR Center and seagoing experience and training onboard vessels operated by AMO-contracted companies.

The objective of the program is to train and develop apprentice engineers so they obtain the required skill sets and aptitude, meet regulatory requirements and perform safely and effectively as licensed engineers onboard AMO-contracted vessels. In the long-term, the program produces engineering officers who are prepared to sail and progress to the rating of Chief Engineer and fill identified industry shortfalls.

All TECH Program graduates from the program's first four years in operation are sailing in the AMO-contracted fleet.
