Tributes from at sea

The tragic loss of 28 of our brothers and sisters and the 5 riders on the El Faro has weighed heavily on the minds of the officers and crew of the USNS Benavidez, as it undoubtedly has on the rest of the men and women of the United States Merchant Marine. While many of us may not have personally known those we lost, their memory, and the sad memory of the loss of the El Faro, will live on in each and every one of us. If at all possible, please express our deepest condolences to the families and friends of those we lost and our hope that they know that they are in our thoughts and prayers.

With Sympathy,

The Officers and Crew of the USNS Benavidez

I want to express our heartfelt sorrow from the Officers and Crew of the Liberty Eagle for the losses suffered by friends and families of our Union Brothers of the SS El Faro.

Today, 7th October at 1500 hours US East coast time the crew of the Maersk Montana held a vigil and observed a moment of silence for the crew of the S/S El Faro.

Our prayers of hope and heartfelt sorrow go out for the crew and to their loved ones.

The vigil was held in mid-Atlantic, as the sun set at 1900 hrs local time. Flags were flown at half mast. Most of Montana's crew knows someone who was on board S/S El Faro.

May God hear our prayers.

Richard G. Hoey
Master, Maersk Montana
