AMO members urged to act early on MMC, TWIC renewals

As was recently reported, the U.S. Coast Guard's National Maritime Center is experiencing elevated processing times for Merchant Mariner Credential applications.

The NMC has requested that mariners submit applications for credential renewals at least 90 days prior to credential expiration. However, mariners have experienced processing times of up to four months for renewal and raise-of-grade applications.

AMO members are advised to submit applications to NMC at least four months in advance if they have no medical issues. Members with medical issues are advised to submit applications to the NMC at least six months in advance.

The bulletin released by the NMC in June is available online.

TWIC delays

In excess of 1 million transportation workers who were issued Transportation Worker Identification Credentials (TWICs) five years ago are due for renewal at the same time, so processing times for renewal applications are increasing with each passing week.

AMO members with expiring TWICs are advised to apply for the three-year Extended Expiration Date (EED) TWIC if they meet the EED criteria. AMO members applying for the five-year renewal are advised to begin the process at least six months prior to the TWIC expiration date.

In both cases, members are urged to keep copies (digital or paper) of the completed application form and the receipt received when the application has been successfully submitted. There have been some instances of applications being lost by the Transportation Security Administration.

More information about applying for an EED TWIC and TWIC pre-enrollment is available on the TSA website.

AMO members who encounter a problem with the renewal of an MMC or TWIC should contact AMO National Vice President, Government Relations, .
