USNS Lummus lauded for flawless execution of refueling operation

The letter below from Keith Bauer, Military Sealift Command technical director for prepositioning (PM3), was sent to General Dynamics American Overseas Marine (AMSEA) regarding the USNS 1st Lt. Jack Lummus, aboard which American Maritime Officers represents all licensed officers. In distributing the letter to the officers and crew of the USNS Lummus, Christopher Nette, vice president of marine operations for AMSEA, stated the following:

Again the officers and crew of the USNS LUMMUS were given a tough task to complete and again they rose to the occasion performing flawlessly. You accomplished the mission with no injuries to the crew, no damage to either vessel and no environmental impact, all of which were risks that were associated with this operation. We want to add AMSEA's thanks to all for a job well done.

The letter from MSC, in part, reads:

I just wanted to send you both a short note of thanks regarding the refueling evolution between USNS LUMMUS and MV WESTPAC EXPRESS that was conducted today. Your ship's and crew's professional and flawless execution of the February 2 astern refueling from the USNS 1ST Lt Jack Lummus to the HSV Westpac Express exemplifies the quality performance that we in PM3 have come to expect from our operating companies.

I am grateful that the USNS LUMMUS was there to provide the badly needed fuel to the MV WESTPAC EXPRESS. The lessons learned and execution protocol that was used to complete this mission will be shared with our new JHSV fleet that are coming on line in the near future, so that they will have the knowledge to execute a similar mission when required. Please extend my personal thanks and appreciation to Captain Hagner and Captain Parsons and their crews for a job well done.
